Where the Lexus ES sits in the market

The ES is Lexus's volume luxury sedan, and the crucial commercial fact is that it is built in Japan and imported into China — Lexus operates no Chinese plants. Sourcing one via China therefore means re-exporting a Japanese-built car, which is a fundamentally different transaction from every other model on this site.

That changes the economics. You are not accessing Chinese production cost; you are moving a Japanese car through a Chinese intermediary, and the price advantage is far smaller or may not exist at all. In most cases sourcing directly from Japan or from a market where Lexus sells officially is cleaner and cheaper.
